The Contractor's Guide to Smart Irrigation Systems

July brings the kind of heat that makes water bills spike. That makes it a good time to talk with your customers about smarter ways to manage irrigation. It's the right moment to move beyond installs and show property owners what better water management can look like.

Smart Irrigation Month gives you a reason to check in with your clients who already pay close attention to their water use. The summer brings drought conditions and city restrictions, so there's no better time to walk them through what smart irrigation can do.

Why July Matters for Irrigation Pros

This is the time of year when customers notice their systems the most. Whether it's overwatering, dry spots, or unusually high bills, July tends to expose all the weak points in their irrigation systems. It's a good opening to talk with customers about what's working, what's not, and where their system could be better.

If your customers care about saving money, following code, or doing the right thing for the environment, you have the tools to help them do it.

How Big Is the Opportunity? Here's a Snapshot:

• More than 13 million outdated controllers are still in use across the U.S.
• Outdoor water use can be cut by up to 30 percent just by switching to a smart controller, according to the EPA.
• Rain sensors alone can save hundreds of gallons per cycle by preventing unnecessary watering.

What to Recommend and Why It Works

Use this month to offer more than routine service. Walk the system with your customers, call out what's wasting water, and show them how small upgrades can make a big difference.

Focus on:

• Smart controllers connect to Wi-Fi and adjust watering automatically based on weather and zone needs.
• Rain and soil sensors fine-tune the schedule by responding to real conditions on the ground.
• Flow meters and alerts make it easier to spot leaks early and keep the system running as it should.

They're straightforward to install and simple to explain to anyone who wants their system to work better.
